GDF9는 TGF-베타(transforming growth factor-beta) 단백질 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 분비성 리간드(ligand)를 암호화하며, 이 리간드는 여러 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합해 유전자 발현을 조절하는 SMAD 계열 전사인자(transcription factor)의 모집과 활성화를 유도한다. 암호화된 전구단백질(preproprotein)은 단백질분해 과정을 거쳐 이황화 결합으로 연결된 동종이량체(homodimer)의 각 소단위를 형성하고, 완성된 단백질은 난소 기능을 조절한다. 발현 감소는 다낭성 난소 증후군(polycystic ovary syndrome)과 연관될 수 있으며, 돌연변이는 이란성 쌍둥이 산모에서 더 흔하게 나타날 수 있다.
