GDF11 유전자는 단백질의 TGF-베타 (transforming growth factor-beta) 계열에 속하는 분비성 리간드(ligand)를 암호화한다. 이 계열의 리간드는 다양한 TGF-베타 수용체에 결합하여 SMAD 계열 전사(transcription) 인자를 모집하고 활성화시키며, 이는 유전자 발현을 조절한다. 암호화된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 이황화결합된 동종이량체(homodimer)의 각 소단위를 생성한다. 이 단백질은 신경계 및 기타 장기 시스템의 발달에 관여하며 노화 조절에 영향을 줄 수 있다.
