유전자 개요
이 유전자는 중추 및 말초 신경계, 위장관, 췌장, 부신, 비뇨생식관에 광범위하게 분포하는 신경내분비 펩타이드(peptide)를 암호화한다. 이 유전자가 지정한 단백질은 프로테아제에 의해 처리되어 갈라닌(galanin)과 갈라닌 메시지-관련 펩타이드(galanin message-associated peptide, GMAP)라는 두 개의 성숙한 펩타이드로 생성되는 전구체이다. 갈라닌은 통증 수용, 섭식 및 에너지 항상성, 삼투압 조절, 수분 균형 등 다양한 생리 기능을 수행한다. GMAP은 항진균(antifungal) 활성을 가지며 선천 면역 체계의 일부로 추정된다.
