GAD2는 인슐린 의존성 당뇨병에서 주요 자가항원으로 확인된 여러 형태의 글루탐산 탈카복실라아제(glutamic acid decarboxylase) 중 하나를 암호화하며, 이 효소(enzyme)는 L-글루탐산으로부터 감마-아미노부티르산(gamma-aminobutyric acid)의 생성을 촉매한다. 인간 췌장에서 자가항체이자 자가반응성 T 세포(T cell)의 표적으로 확인되어 병원성 역할이 제시되었고, 스티프맨 증후군(stiff man syndrome)에도 관여할 수 있다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
