이 유전자는 감마-아미노뷰티르산(GABA) 수용체(receptor)를 지정한다. GABA는 포유류 뇌의 주요 억제성 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter)로, 리간드(ligand)-개폐성 염소 채널인 GABA-A 수용체에서 작용한다. GABA-A 수용체는 알파, 베타, 감마, 델타, 로(rho) 등 여러 소단위(subunit) 계열의 단백질로 구성된 5량체이다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 간질 및 열성 경련과 관련이 있다. 이 유전자에 대해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)가 확인되었다.
