이 유전자는 감마-아미노뷰티르산(GABA) 수용체(receptor)를 암호화합니다. GABA는 포유류 뇌의 주요 억제성 신경전달물질(neurotransmitter)로, 리간드(ligand)-개폐성 염소 채널인 GABA-A 수용체에서 작용합니다. 이 채널의 염소 전도도는 GABA-A 수용체에 결합하는 벤조디아제핀과 같은 물질에 의해 조절될 수 있습니다. GABA-A 수용체는 알파, 베타, 감마, 델타, 로의 여러 소단위 클래스로 구성된 5량체입니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 소아 근간대성 간질 및 소아 결신 간질 제4형을 유발합니다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체가 이 유전자에 대해 확인되었습니다.
