프라탁신(FXN) 유전자는 FRATAXIN 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 미토콘드리아 철 운송과 호흡 조절에 관여한다. 8-33회 반복되던 FXN 유전자 내 인트론 삼핵산 반복 서열 GAA가 90회 이상으로 확장되면 프리드리히 운동실조(Friedreich ataxia)를 유발한다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
