FOXP1은 포크헤드 박스(forkhead box, FOX) 전사인자(transcription factor) 계열의 P 서브패밀리(subfamily)에 속하며, 발생 과정과 성체에서 조직 및 세포 유형 특이적 유전자 전사 조절에 중요한 역할을 한다. FOXP1 단백질은 DNA 결합 도메인과 단백질-단백질 결합 도메인을 모두 지닌다. 여러 종양(tumor) 유형에서 소실되고 종양 억제 유전자가 존재하는 것으로 보고된 염색체 영역(3p14.1)에 위치해 종양 억제자로 작용할 수 있으며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 생성된다.
