FOLR1이 암호화하는 단백질은 엽산 수용체(folate receptor) 계열에 속하며, 엽산과 그 환원 유도체에 결합해 5-메틸테트라하이드로폴산(5-methyltetrahydrofolate)을 세포 안으로 운반한다. 이 산물은 글리코실-포스파티딜이노시톨(glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol) 연결을 통해 막에 고정되거나 가용성 형태로 존재하는 분비 단백질이며, 해당 유전자의 돌연변이는 뇌 엽산 수송 결핍(cerebral folate transport deficiency)에 의한 신경퇴행과 연관되어 있다. 두 개의 프로모터, 여러 전사 시작 부위, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 인해 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이가 확인되었다.
