이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 RNA에 결합하며 폴리솜(polysome)과 연관되어 있다. 이 단백질은 핵(nucleus)에서 세포질(cytoplasm)으로의 mRNA 수송에 관여하는 것으로 추정된다. 5’ 비번역 영역(5’ UTR)에 존재하는 삼뉴클레오타이드 반복서열(trinucleotide repeat) CGG는 정상적으로 6~~53회 복제되나, 55~~230회로 확장되는 것이 취약 X 증후군(fragile X syndrome)의 원인이 된다. 삼뉴클레오타이드 반복서열의 확장은 조기 난소 부전(premature ovarian failure, POF1)의 한 형태를 유발하기도 한다.
