유전자 개요

FGF9가 암호화하는 단백질은 섬유아세포 성장 인자(fibroblast growth factor, FGF) 계열에 속하며, 광범위한 유사분열 촉진(mitogenic) 및 세포 생존 활성을 바탕으로 배아 발생, 세포 성장, 형태형성, 조직 복구, 종양 성장과 침윤 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. 본래 배양된 신경교세포(glial cell)에 성장 자극 효과를 나타내는 분비 인자로 분리되었으며, 신경계에서는 주로 뉴런에서 생성되어 신경교세포 발달에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 여겨진다. 마우스 상동체(homolog)의 발현은 Sonic hedgehog(Shh) 신호전달에 의존하고, 해당 유전자가 결여된 마우스는 수컷에서 암컷으로의 성전환 표현형을 보여 고환 배아발생에서의 기능을 시사한다.
