유전자 개요

FGF2가 암호화하는 단백질은 섬유아세포 성장 인자(fibroblast growth factor, FGF) 계열에 속하며, 헤파린(heparin)에 결합하고 광범위한 유사분열 촉진 및 혈관신생 활성을 지녀 사지와 신경계 발달, 상처 치유, 종양 성장 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. 해당 mRNA는 여러 폴리아데닐화(polyadenylation) 부위를 가지며 비-AUG(CUG) 및 AUG 개시 코돈으로부터 대체 번역되어 서로 다른 특성을 지닌 5가지 아이소폼(isoform)을 생성한다. CUG 개시 동형단백질은 핵에 위치하여 인트라크린(intracrine) 효과를 담당하는 반면, AUG 개시 형태는 주로 세포질에 존재하며 측분비(paracrine) 및 자가분비(autocrine) 효과를 담당한다.
