FGF18이 암호화하는 단백질은 섬유아세포 성장 인자(fibroblast growth factor, FGF) 계열에 속하며, FGF 계열은 광범위한 유사분열 촉진 및 세포 생존 활성을 바탕으로 배아 발생, 세포 성장, 형태형성(morphogenesis), 조직 복구, 종양 성장과 침윤 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. 시험관 내(in vitro) 실험에서 이 단백질은 PC12 세포의 신경돌기 성장을 유도하는 것으로 나타났으며, 마우스와 병아리의 유사 단백질 연구에서는 간과 소장을 비롯한 여러 조직의 증식을 자극하는 다면발현(pleiotropic) 성장 인자로 제시되었다. 또한 마우스의 유사 유전자 녹아웃(knockout) 연구는 이 단백질이 소뇌 정중선 구조의 증식과 분화 조절에 관여함을 시사하였다.
