유전자 개요

FGF12가 암호화하는 단백질은 섬유아세포 성장 인자(fibroblast growth factor, FGF) 계열의 구성원으로, 광범위한 유사분열 촉진(mitogenic) 및 세포 생존 활성을 지니며 배아 발달, 세포 성장, 형태형성, 조직 복구, 종양 성장과 침윤 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. 대부분의 FGF 계열 구성원이 가진 N-말단 신호서열은 없으나 핵 위치 신호(nuclear localization signal)로 작용하는 염기성 잔기 군집을 포함하여, 포유류 세포에 형질주입하면 분비되지 않고 세포핵(nucleus)에 축적된다. 다만 이 단백질의 구체적 기능은 아직 규명되지 않았다.
