유전자 개요

FGF1이 암호화하는 단백질은 섬유아세포 성장 인자(fibroblast growth factor, FGF) 계열에 속하며, 광범위한 유사분열 촉진 및 세포 생존 활성을 지녀 배아 발생, 세포 성장, 형태형성(morphogenesis), 조직 복구, 종양(tumor) 성장과 침습 등 다양한 생물학적 과정에 관여한다. 이 단백질은 내피세포의 이동과 증식을 조절하는 인자이자 혈관신생(angiogenesis) 인자로 기능하며, 시험관 내에서 다양한 중배엽 및 신경외배엽 유래 세포에 대한 유사분열 촉진 인자로 작용해 기관형성(organogenesis)에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)를 암호화하는 여러 대체 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되어 있다.
