유전자 개요
이 유전자는 이소펜테닐 피로인산(isopentenyl pyrophosphate)과 디메틸알릴 피로인산(dimethylallyl pyrophosphate)으로부터 제라닐 피로인산(geranyl pyrophosphate) 및 파르네실 피로인산(farnesyl pyrophosphate)의 생성을 촉매하는 효소(enzyme)를 암호화한다. 생성된 파르네실 피로인산은 콜레스테롤 및 스테롤 생합성에서의 핵심 중간체이며, 단백질 파르네실화(protein farnesylation)와 제라닐게라닐화(geranylgeranylation)의 기질(substrate)이다. 또한 특정 호르몬(hormone) 수용체 및 성장 수용체에 대한 리간드(ligand) 또는 작용제(agonist)로 작용한다. 이 효소를 억제하는 약물은 소형 GTPase(small GTPases)의 번역 후 변형(post-translational modifications)을 막아 골 흡수 관련 질환 치료에 사용되어 왔다. 이 유전자는 다양한 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체(transcript variants)가 발견되었으며, 여러 유사 위유전자(pseudogenes)가 염색체 1, 7, 14, 15, 21, X에서 발견되었다.
