FCN1은 피콜린(ficolin) 단백질군에 속하며, 이 군은 리더 펩타이드(leader peptide), 짧은 N-말단 분절, 콜라겐 유사 영역, C-말단 피브리노겐 유사 도메인의 존재로 특징지어진다. 콜라겐 유사 및 피브리노겐 유사 도메인은 보체 단백질 C1q, 콜렉틴(collectin)으로 알려진 C형 렉틴, 테나신(tenascin)과 같은 다른 단백질에서도 개별적으로 발견되지만, 이들 단백질은 서로 다른 표적을 인식하며 기능적으로 구별된다. FCN1이 암호화하는 피콜린 1(ficolin 1)은 주로 말초혈액 백혈구에서 발현되며, 엘라스틴 결합 활성을 지닌 혈장 단백질로 기능할 것으로 제안되어 왔다.
