이 유전자는 페닐알라닌을 해당 tRNA로 옮기는 단백질을 지정한다. 이 단백질은 미토콘드리아에 국소화되어 미토콘드리아 단백질 번역에서 역할을 수행한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 산화적 인산화 결핍 14 (Alpers 뇌병증)를 유발할 수 있다. 대체 스플라이싱은 여러 전사 변이체를 초래한다.
