FAH는 푸마릴아세토아세타아제(fumarylacetoacetase) 활성을 가질 것으로 예측되며, L-페닐알라닌·호모겐티세이트·티로신 이화 과정(catabolic process)에 관여하고 아르기닌 이화 과정의 상위 또는 그 과정 내에서 작용하는 것으로 예측된다. 세포외 엑소좀(extracellular exosome)에 위치하는 것으로 확인되었으며, 제I형 티로신혈증(tyrosinemia type I)과 연관되어 있다.
