이 유전자에 의해 암호화되는 단백질은 지방산 불포화효소(fatty acid desaturase, FADS) 유전자 계열의 구성원입니다. 불포화효소는 지방산 사슬의 특정 탄소 사이에 이중 결합을 도입하여 지방산의 불포화도를 조절합니다. FADS 계열 구성원들은 N-말단 시토크롬 b5 유사 도메인과 C-말단 다중 막 관통형 불포화효소 부분으로 구성된 융합 산물로 간주되며, 두 부분 모두 보존된 히스티딘 모티프를 특징으로 합니다.
