이 유전자는 세포 표면 수용체와 상호작용하며 세포 사멸 신호를 매개하는 어댑터 단백질을 암호화한다. 단백질의 C-말단 사멸 도메인을 통해 TNFRSF6/Fas 수용체, 종양 괴사 인자 수용체, TNFRSF25, TNFSF10/TRAIL 수용체에 의해 이 단백질이 모집되어, 이들 수용체에 의해 시작되는 사멸 신호 전달에 참여한다. 이 단백질이 수용체와 상호작용하면 N-말단 효과 도메인이 드러나며, 이를 통해 캐스페이스-8(caspase-8)을 모집하여 시스테인 단백질분해효소(cysteine protease) 연쇄 반응을 활성화한다. 마우스에서의 제거 연구는 초기 T 세포 발달에서 이 단백질의 중요성을 시사한다.
