FABP1은 간에 존재하는 지방산 결합 단백질(fatty acid binding protein)을 암호화한다. 지방산 결합 단백질은 장쇄 지방산(long-chain fatty acid)을 비롯한 소수성 리간드(hydrophobic ligand)에 결합하는, 작고 고도로 보존된 세포질 단백질(cytoplasmic protein) 계열로, 지방산의 흡수·수송·대사에 관여하는 것으로 여겨진다. 특히 이 단백질과 FABP6(회장형 지방산 결합 단백질, ileal fatty acid binding protein)은 담즙산(bile acid)에도 결합할 수 있다.
