이 유전자는 미세융모에서 단백질-티로신 키나아제(protein-tyrosine kinase) 기질로 작용하는 세포질 주변 막 단백질을 암호화한다. ERM 단백질 계열의 구성원으로서, 이 단백질은 세포막(plasma membrane)과 액틴 세포골격(actin cytoskeleton) 사이의 중간체 역할을 한다. 이 단백질은 세포 표면 구조의 부착, 이동 및 조직화에 핵심적인 역할을 하며, 여러 인간 암과 관련이 있는 것으로 보고되었다. 이 유전자에 대해 염색체 3에 위치한 유사 위유전자(pseudogene)가 확인되었으며, 대체 스플라이싱 변이체들도 보고되었다.
