이 유전자는 과산화효소(peroxidase) 유전자 계열에 속하며 호산구(eosinophil)에서 발현된다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 전구단백질은 펩타이드 가수분해 과정을 거쳐 공유 결합된 무거운 사슬과 가벼운 사슬로 분리되어 성숙한 효소(enzyme)를 형성하며, 이는 산화제(oxidant)로 작용한다. 이 효소는 기생충 감염이나 알레르겐 자극 부위에서 방출되어 원생동물이나 기생충의 용해(lysis)를 매개한다. 해당 유전자는 17번 염색체 상의 다른 과산화효소 유전자들과 함께 유전자 군집을 이룬다. 이 유전자 돌연변이는 호산구 과산화효소 결핍증을 초래한다.
