유전자 개요

EPO는 네 개의 알파 나선 다발로 구성된 분비성 당화 사이토카인(cytokine)을 암호화하며, 암호화된 단백질은 주로 신장에서 합성되어 혈장으로 분비된 뒤 적혈구생성소 수용체(erythropoietin receptor)에 결합해 골수에서 적혈구 생성, 즉 조혈(erythropoiesis)을 촉진한다. 저산소(hypoxia) 조건에서 발현이 증가하여 조혈을 늘리고 혈액의 산소 운반 능력을 높이며, 뇌와 눈에서도 발현이 관찰된다. 또한 당뇨망막병증(diabetic retinopathy)과 안압 상승(ocular hypertension)에서 발현 증가가 보고되었다.
