EPHX1은 에폭사이드 가수분해효소(epoxide hydrolase)를 암호화하며, 이 효소는 방향족 화합물의 분해 과정에서 생성된 에폭사이드(epoxide)를 포합 및 체외 배출이 가능한 trans-디하이드로디올(trans-dihydrodiol)로 전환하는 핵심 생체전환(biotransformation) 효소다. 에폭사이드 가수분해효소는 에폭사이드의 활성화와 해독 모두에 관여하며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 자간전증(preeclampsia), 효소 결핍 또는 활성 증가를 일으킨다. 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 선택적 스플라이싱 전사체 변이도 보고되었다.
