이 단백질은 단백질 합성 개시의 첫 조절 단계를 촉매하는 번역 개시 인자(EIF2)로, 개시 tRNA와 40S 리보솜 소단위체의 결합을 촉진합니다. 이 결합은 메티오닐-tRNA, EIF2, 그리고 GTP로 이루어진 삼원 복합체 형태로 일어납니다. EIF2는 3개의 서로 다른 소단위체로 구성되며, 36-kD EIF2-알파 소단위체(이 유전자에 의해 지정됨), 38-kD EIF2-베타 소단위체(EIF2S2), 그리고 52-kD EIF2-감마 소단위체(EIF2S3)를 포함합니다. 삼원 복합체 형성 속도는 EIF2-알파의 인산화 상태에 의해 조절됩니다.
