EGFR이 암호화하는 단백질은 단백질 키나아제(protein kinase) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 막관통 당단백질(transmembrane glycoprotein)로, 표피성장인자(epidermal growth factor) 계열 인자의 수용체(receptor)이다. 표피성장인자와 결합하면 수용체 이합체화(dimerization)와 티로신 자가인산화(tyrosine autophosphorylation)를 유도해 세포 증식을 촉진한다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 폐암(lung cancer)과 연관되며, SARS-CoV-2 감염으로 인한 중증 코로나바이러스감염증-2019(COVID-19)에 기여하는 사이토카인 폭풍(cytokine storm)의 한 구성 요소이다.
