유전자 개요

EGF 유전자는 표피 성장 인자(epidermal growth factor) 슈퍼패밀리(superfamily)에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하며, 암호화된 전구단백질은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 53개 아미노산으로 이루어진 표피 성장 인자 펩타이드(peptide)로 가공된다. 이 단백질은 세포 표면 수용체인 표피 성장 인자 수용체(EGFR)에 높은 친화도로 결합하여 다양한 세포 유형의 성장, 증식, 분화에 관여하는 강력한 유사분열 촉진 인자(mitogen)로 작용한다. 이 유전자의 결함은 저마그네슘혈증 4형의 원인이 되며, 조절 이상은 특정 암의 성장 및 진행과 연관되어 있고, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성된다.
