이 유전자는 에프린(ephrin, EPH) 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 에프린 단백질과 EPH 수용체(receptor) 계열 단백질은 수용체 티로신 키나아제(receptor protein-tyrosine kinase) 중 가장 큰 아족족을 이루며, 특히 신경계 및 적혈구 생성(erythropoiesis) 과정의 발달 사건 중재에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 구조와 서열 관계에 따라 에프린은 막(membrane)에 당지질결합(glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage)으로 고정되는 에프린-A(EFNA) 등급과 막횡단 단백질(transmembrane protein)인 에프린-B(EFNB) 등급으로 나뉜다. 이 유전자는 EFNB 등급의 에프린을 암호화하며, 이는 EPHB4 및 EPHA3 수용체에 결합한다.
