EDN1은 단백질 분해 과정을 거쳐 엔도텔린/사라포톡신(endothelin/sarafotoxin) 계열에 속하는 분비 펩타이드를 생성하는 전구단백질(preproprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 펩타이드는 강력한 혈관수축제(vasoconstrictor)이며, 그 동족 수용체(cognate receptor)는 폐동맥 고혈압(pulmonary arterial hypertension) 치료의 표적이 된다. 비정상적 발현은 종양 형성(tumorigenesis)을 촉진할 수 있으며, 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사 변이체가 만들어진다.
