이 유전자는 세포질 다이닌(cytoplasmic dynein) 복합체의 구성 요소인 라이트 인터미디에이트 서브유닛(light intermediate subunit) 계열 단백질을 암호화한다. 이 복합체는 세포 내 수송 및 유사분열(mitosis) 동안의 염색체 분리에 관여한다. 해당 단백질은 스핀들 조립 체크포인트(spindle assembly checkpoint, SAC)를 키네토코어에서 스핀들 극으로 이동시키는 역할을 한다. 또한, 세포 내 소포(vesicle) 수송을 촉진하기 위해 다른 화물 분자와의 결합을 매개할 수도 있다.
