DUT는 dUTP를 dUMP와 피로인산(pyrophosphate)으로 가수분해하는 보편적 동종사량체(homotetramer) 효소를 암호화하는, 뉴클레오타이드 대사의 필수 유전자다. 이 반응은 DNA 복제에 필요한 티민 뉴클레오타이드 합성을 위한 dUMP 전구체를 공급하는 동시에 세포 내 dUTP 농도를 제한하는데, dUTP가 과도하면 우라실(uracil)이 DNA에 다량 삽입되어 우라실 글리코실라제(uracil glycosylase)에 의한 광범위한 절제 복구가 유발되고 결국 DNA 분절과 세포 사멸로 이어진다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)으로 미토콘드리아(mitochondrion) 또는 세포핵(nucleus)에 국재하는 서로 다른 아이소폼이 생성되며, 관련 가성유전자는 19번 염색체에 위치한다.
