DSP는 중간섬유(intermediate filaments)를 데스모솜 판(desmosomal plaque)에 고정하고 기능적 데스모솜(desmosome)의 필수 구성요소를 이루는 단백질을 암호화한다. DSP의 돌연변이는 피부 취약성-양모상 모발 증후군(skin fragility-woolly hair syndrome)을 비롯한 여러 심근병증(cardiomyopathy)과 각화피부증(keratoderma)의 원인이 된다. 대체 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)을 통해 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variants)가 생성된다.
