유전자 개요
이 유전자는 데스모글레인(desmoglein) 단백질 서브패밀리(subfamily)의 구성원을 암호화한다. 데스모글레인과 데스모콜린은 데스모솜(desmosome)의 주요 구성 요소인 카드헤린 유사 초막 당단백질(cadherin-like transmembrane glycoproteins)이다. 데스모솜은 전단력(shearing forces)에 저항하는 세포-세포 접합부이며, 기계적 스트레스에 노출된 세포에 고농도로 존재한다. 이 유전자는 18번 염색체(chromosome 18)에서 다른 데스모글레인 계열 구성원들과 함께 군집(cluster)을 이룬다. 암호화된 단백질은 자가면역성 피부 물집 질환인 낙엽천포창(pemphigus foliaceus)에서 자가항체(auto-antibodies)의 표적으로 확인되었다. 이 유전자의 파괴는 또한 피부 질환인 후천성 수장족저각화증(palmoplantar keratoderma) 및 홍피증(erythroderma)과 관련이 있다.
