DPP8 유전자는 펩타이드 기질을 프롤릴 결합에서 절단할 수 있는 소규모 디펩티딜 펩티다제(dipeptidyl peptidase) 패밀리인 펩티다제 S9B (peptidase S9B) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 유전자가 지정하는 단백질은 디펩티딜 펩티다제 IV (dipeptidyl peptidase IV)와 유사성을 공유하며, 어디에나 존재하게 발현되고 동일한 기질을 가수분해한다. 이러한 유사성은 디펩티딜 펩티다제 IV와 같이 이 단백질이 T-세포 활성화 및 면역 기능에서 역할을 할 수 있음을 시사한다. 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 기술된 바 있다.
