이 유전자는 디옥시리보뉴클레아제 I (deoxyribonuclease I) 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 DNA를 가수분해하며, 액틴 (actin)에 의해 저해되지 않고, 세포자멸사 (apoptosis) 중 DNA 분해를 매개한다. 이 유전자 돌연변이는 전신 홍반성 루푸스-16 (systemic lupus erythematosus-16)의 원인이 된다. 이 유전자에 대해 다수의 아이소폼 (isoform)을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이가 관찰되었다.
