DKK1은 분비성 단백질인 디코프(dickkopf) 계열의 한 구성원을 암호화하며, 이 계열은 단백질 간 상호작용을 매개하는 두 개의 시스테인 풍부 도메인(cysteine-rich domain)을 특징으로 한다. 암호화된 단백질은 LRP6 공동수용체(co-receptor)에 결합하여 베타-카테닌(beta-catenin) 의존성 Wnt 신호전달을 억제하며, 배아 발생에 관여하고 성인의 골 형성에도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 또한 여러 인간 암종에서 발현 증가가 관찰되었으며, 암세포주에서 증식과 침습, 성장을 촉진할 수 있는 것으로 보고된다.
