DICER1은 아미노 말단(amino terminus)에 DEXH 박스를 포함한 RNA 헬리카아제(RNA helicase) 모티프(motif)와 카르복시 말단(carboxy terminus)에 RNA 모티프를 지닌 단백질을 암호화한다. 생성된 단백질은 리보뉴클레아제(ribonuclease)로 작용하여 RNA 간섭(RNA interference)과 small temporal RNA(stRNA) 경로에서 유전자 발현을 억제하는 활성 소형 RNA 성분을 생성하는 데 필요하다. 또한 이 단백질은 지카(Zika)와 SARS-CoV-2를 비롯한 RNA 바이러스에 대해 활성을 나타내는 강력한 항바이러스제(antiviral)로 작용하며, 선택적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 다수의 전사체 변이체를 만들어낸다.
