DES는 근육 특이적 클래스 III 중간섬유(intermediate filament)를 암호화한다. 이 단백질의 동종중합체(homopolymer)는 근원섬유(myofibril)를 서로, 그리고 세포막(plasma membrane)과 연결하는 안정적인 세포질 내 섬유상 네트워크를 형성한다. DES의 돌연변이는 데스민 관련 근병증, 가족성 심장·골격근 근병증(CSM), 원위 근병증과 연관된다.
