이 단백질은 숙주 방어에 관여하는 것으로 생각되는 항균 및 세포독성 펩타이드 계열인 디펜신(defensin)의 일원이다. 미생물 살해 과립(microbicidal granules)에서 발견되며, 식세포(phagocyte) 매개 숙주 방어에 역할을 할 가능성이 있다. 이 유전자는 8번 염색체에 클러스터링된 여러 알파 디펜신 유전자 중 하나이며, 디펜신, 알파 1 유전자와는 단 하나의 아미노산 차이를 보인다.
