DDO는 D-아스파르트산(D-aspartate)과 N-메틸 D-아스파르트산(N-methyl D-aspartate)의 산화적 탈아미노화를 촉매하는 퍼옥시좀 플라보단백질(peroxisomal flavoprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 반응에서는 플라빈 아데닌 다이뉴클레오타이드(flavin adenine dinucleotide) 또는 6-하이드록시플라빈 아데닌 다이뉴클레오타이드(6-hydroxyflavin adenine dinucleotide)가 보조 인자(cofactor)로 작용할 수 있다. 서로 다른 아이소폼(isoform)을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)이 보고되어 있다.
