이 유전자는 작고 류신이 풍부한 프로테오글리칸(proteoglycan) 계열 단백질의 구성원을 암호화한다. 대안적 스플라이싱(alternative splicing)은 여러 전사체 변이체(transcript variant)를 만들어내며, 그중 적어도 하나는 성숙 단백질을 생성하기 위해 단백질 분해를 통해 처리되는 전구단백질(preproprotein)을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 콜라겐 섬유 조립에 관여한다. 여러 세포 표면 수용체에 대한 이 단백질의 결합은 종양 억제에서 이 단백질의 역할을 매개하며, 여기에는 오토파지(autophagy)와 염증(inflammation)에 대한 촉진 효과와 혈관신생(angiogenesis) 및 종양 형성(tumorigenesis)에 대한 억제 효과가 포함된다.
