이 유전자는 다양한 생물학적 활성을 가진 성숙한 펩타이드(peptide)로 가공되는 분비 단백질을 암호화한다. C-말단 펩타이드는 땀에서 지속적으로 발현되며 항균(antibacterial) 및 항진균(antifungal) 활성을 가진다. 확산 생존 회피 펩타이드(diffusible survival evasion peptide)라고도 알려진 N-말단 펩타이드는 심각한 산화 스트레스 조건에서 신경 세포 생존을 촉진한다. N-말단 펩타이드의 당화된 형태는 암(cancer) 환자의 악액질(cachexia, 근육 소실)과 관련될 수 있다. 대체 스플라이싱은 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 여러 전사체 변이를 초래한다.
