DBI는 호르몬에 의해 조절되는 단백질인 디아제팜 결합 저해제(diazepam binding inhibitor)를 암호화하며, 지질 대사와 더불어 뇌 시냅스의 A형 감마-아미노부티르산 수용체(type A gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor)에서 신호 전달을 조절하는 베타-카르볼린(beta-carboline) 및 벤조디아제핀(benzodiazepine)의 치환에 관여한다. 이 단백질은 효모부터 포유류까지 보존되어 있으며, 중쇄 및 장쇄 아실-조효소 A(acyl-Coenzyme A) 에스터의 소수성 결합 부위를 이루는 7개의 연속 잔기가 가장 잘 보존된 도메인을 구성한다. 또한 코르티코트로핀 의존성 부신 스테로이드 생성(corticotropin-dependent adrenal steroidogenesis)의 매개체로 작용하는 동시에 췌장 분비의 되먹임 조절과 식후 콜레시스토키닌(cholecystokinin) 방출을 매개하는 것으로 알려져 있다.
