이 유전자는 근육에서 세포외 기질과 세포골격(cytoskeleton)을 연결하는 디스트로핀-당단백질(dystrophin-glycoprotein) 복합체의 핵심 구성요소인 디스트로글리칸(dystroglycan)을 암호화한다. 암호화된 전구체단백질은 O- 및 N-당화(glycosylation) 과정을 거치고 단백질 분해를 통해 알파 및 베타 소단위체로 생성된다. 이 유전자의 특정 돌연변이는 다양한 형태의 근이영양증을 유발하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 대체 스플라이싱은 동일한 단백질을 암호화하는 여러 전사 변이체를 생성한다.
