DAD1은 ‘defender against apoptotic cell death’의 약자로, 온도 민감성 tsBN7 세포주에서 프로그램된 세포사(programmed cell death)의 음성 조절자(negative regulator)로 처음 동정되었다. 비허용 온도(nonpermissive temperature)로 전환하면 온도 민감성 세포에서 DAD1 단백질이 소실되었는데, 이는 DAD1의 손실이 세포자멸사(apoptosis)를 유발함을 시사한다. 또한 DAD1은 온전한 막과 정제된 효소 모두에서 올리고당전이효소(oligosaccharyltransferase)의 밀접하게 결합된 소단위로 여겨지며, 이는 진핵생물에서 N-연결 당화(N-linked glycosylation)의 필수적 특성을 반영한다.
