CYR61(CCN1)이 암호화하는 분비 단백질은 성장 인자(growth factor)에 의해 유도되며, 내피세포의 부착을 촉진하고 여러 인테그린(integrin) 및 헤파란 황산 프로테오글리칸(heparan sulfate proteoglycan)과 상호작용한다. 이 단백질은 세포 증식과 분화, 혈관신생(angiogenesis), 세포자멸사(apoptosis), 세포외기질(extracellular matrix) 형성에도 관여한다.
