유전자 개요

이 유전자는 시토크롬 P450(cytochrome P450) 계열의 효소 구성원을 암호화한다. 이 단백질은 약물 대사, 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드 및 기타 지질 합성에 관여하는 많은 반응을 촉매하는 모노옥시게나아제(monooxygenase)이다. 이 소포체(endoplasmic reticulum) 막(membrane) 단백질은 간 외 조직의 콜레스테롤 분해 경로에서 첫 반응을 촉매하며, 이는 콜레스테롤을 담즙산으로 전환시킨다. 이 효소는 전체 담즙산 합성에서 작은 역할을 할 것으로 추정되지만, 죽상동맥경화증(atherosclerosis) 발달, 신경스테로이드(neurosteroid) 대사 및 성호르몬(sex hormone) 합성에 관여할 수도 있다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 상염색체 열성 질환인 유전성(hereditary) 경직성 척수마비(SPG5 또는 HSP)와 관련이 있다.
