유전자 개요

이 유전자는 사이토크롬 P450 (cytochrome P450) 계열 효소의 구성원을 암호화한다. 사이토크롬 P450 단백질은 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드 및 기타 지질의 합성뿐만 아니라 약물 대사에 관여하는 많은 반응을 촉매하는 모노옥시게나아제(monooxygenase)이다. 이 소포체 막 (endoplasmic reticulum membrane) 단백질은 간에서 콜레스테롤을 담즙산으로 전환하는 콜레스테롤 이화 경로의 첫 단계를 촉매한다. 이 반응은 담즙산 합성의 속도 결정 단계이자 주요 조절 부위로, 체내 콜레스테롤 제거의 주요 기전이다. 이 유전자의 프로모터 (promoter) 내 다형성(polymorphism)은 담즙산 합성 결함과 관련이 있다.
